Wayanad is Kerala's green secret — a forested plateau perched at 700–2,100 metres in the Western Ghats, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Unlike other Kerala destinations, Wayanad is defined not by backwaters but by mist-covered forests, tribal culture, dramatic cliff viewpoints and a dense wildlife corridor linking Nagarahole to Mudumalai.
From Bangalore, Wayanad is about 280 km and 5 hours — the last stretch through Bandipur Tiger Reserve is one of India's most scenic highway drives (note: the highway closes from 9 PM to 6 AM for wildlife protection).
Top Places to Visit

Edakkal Caves
Ancient rock shelters with Stone Age petroglyphs dating back 6,000 years. A 1 km uphill walk from the base. Book tickets online through the Kerala Tourism portal to avoid long queues.

Chembra Peak
Wayanad's highest peak at 2,100 m. A 7 km trek from Meppadi through shola forests and grassland. The heart-shaped lake at mid-point is the trail's most photographed spot. Guide required, permit from Forest Dept.

Banasura Sagar Dam
India's largest earthen dam — a vast reservoir surrounded by wooded hills. Boat rides, island picnics and the backdrop of Banasura mountain make it a popular afternoon outing.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — one of the largest protected forest areas in the world. Morning jeep safaris offer sightings of elephants, spotted deer, wild boar and gaur. Tiger and leopard are present but rare.
Local Tip: Drive through Bandipur Tiger Reserve section of NH766 during the day — the forest on either side of the highway is stunning and elephant sightings are common. The highway closes at 9 PM sharp, so plan your Wayanad arrival before dark.
Best Time to Visit
October to May is the overall ideal window. October–February is the most popular for cool weather and clear visibility for treks.
March–May is dry season — great for wildlife spotting as animals congregate near water sources in Muthanga. Waterfalls dry up but wildlife activity peaks.
Monsoon (June–September): Wayanad turns intensely green and lush. Trekking permits (Chembra, Edakkal) are suspended during heavy rain. Best for forest atmosphere, not for outdoor activities.
How to Reach from Bangalore
From Bangalore, one main route:
- Via Mysore – Gudalur: NH275 to Mysore → NH212 via Bandipur → Gudalur → Kalpetta (Wayanad HQ). ~280 km, 5–5.5 hrs. The route through Bandipur is stunning.
Important: NH766 through Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closed 9 PM to 6 AM. Plan your departure from Bangalore to clear Bandipur by 8:30 PM or stay over in Ooty/Gudalur if delayed.
