Travel Tips for
Karnataka & South India

Seasons, safety, permits, packing and getting around — practical advice from people who travel these roads every week.

Best Time to Visit Karnataka

Karnataka has four distinct travel seasons — each with its own pros, cons and ideal destinations.

Oct – Feb

Peak Season

The best all-round time — cool, dry weather across Karnataka. Hampi, Coorg, Chikmagalur and coastal destinations are all at their best.

Best for: Everything
Mar – May

Summer

Hot in the plains (35–40°C) but hill stations like Coorg, Ooty and Chikmagalur remain pleasant. Ideal for wildlife spotting as animals cluster near water.

Best: Hill stations, Wildlife
Jun – Sep

Monsoon

Spectacular for waterfalls, green landscapes and empty roads. Hampi and Badami roads can flood. Coorg receives heavy rainfall — beautiful but check roads before you go.

Best: Waterfalls, Coorg
Sep – Oct

Post-Monsoon

The landscape is at its greenest, waterfalls are still full, and crowds haven't arrived yet. Often the best value and least crowded time for most Karnataka destinations.

Best: Value, Crowds

Packing for Karnataka

Adjust by season and destination type — hill stations need layers even in April; coastal trips need sun protection year-round.

Essentials (Always)

  • Government photo ID (Aadhaar/Passport)
  • Cash — many hill areas have limited ATMs
  • Power bank
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Basic first aid (ORS, antacid, plasters)
  • Phone charger + adapter
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+

Hill Stations (Coorg, Chikmagalur, Ooty)

  • Light jacket / windcheater
  • Warm layer for mornings (Oct–Feb)
  • Waterproof footwear (monsoon)
  • Insect repellent
  • Raincoat or compact umbrella
  • Torch / headlamp for treks
  • Trekking shoes if hiking

Temple & Heritage Sites

  • Modest clothing — shoulders covered
  • Easy slip-on footwear (removed at temples)
  • Scarf or stole (head cover if required)
  • Small padlock for lockers
  • Portable phone battery
  • Early morning start — cooler and quieter
  • Offline maps (many sites have no signal)

Safety Tips for South India Travel

Bandipur Tiger Reserve — No Night Driving

NH 766 through Bandipur is closed to civilian traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM to protect wildlife. If you're driving Bangalore to Ooty or Wayanad, plan to clear the reserve before dark or stay overnight at Ooty-side.

Interstate Permit for Andhra Pradesh Routes

Cabs travelling to Lepakshi, Tirupati or other Andhra destinations require an interstate permit. Book through a licensed cab operator (not random aggregators) to ensure this is covered.

Ghat Roads — Drive Slowly, Stop Carefully

Western Ghat roads (Coorg, Chikmagalur, Ooty) are narrow with blind turns. Never overtake on a curve, stop only at designated viewpoints, and avoid driving after heavy rain at night.

💡

Download Offline Maps Before You Leave

Mobile signal drops significantly in ghat regions and forest reserves. Download Google Maps or Maps.me offline areas for Coorg, Wayanad and Kabini before your trip. This has saved countless travellers from wrong turns.

Liquor Laws Vary by State

Tamil Nadu enforces strict checks at the Karnataka and Andhra borders. Carrying liquor across the TN border can result in fines. Andhra Pradesh is a dry state — no alcohol available except in certain licensed hotels in major cities.

Book Wildlife Safaris in Advance

Kabini, Nagarahole, Bandipur and Mudumalai safaris fill up weeks ahead during peak season (Oct–Feb). Book online through the official Karnataka Forest Department portal as soon as your dates are confirmed.
