Chikmagalur is India's coffee capital and Karnataka's most underrated hill destination. Home to Mullayanagiri — the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,930 metres — it combines thrilling treks, misty forests, rushing waterfalls and some of the finest plantation homestay experiences in South India.
Just 240 km from Bangalore, it's a perfect 2-night escape. The drive itself through the Sakleshpur ghats is one of Karnataka's most scenic road journeys.
Top Places to Visit

Mullayanagiri Peak
Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 m. A moderate 30-minute climb from the road to a stunning 360-degree view of the Western Ghats. Best visited early morning for clear skies and no crowds.

Hebbe Falls
A majestic two-tiered waterfall deep inside the Bhadra Tiger Reserve. Jeep hire is mandatory for the last 8 km — the ride through the forest is half the experience.

Baba Budangiri
A sacred mountain ridge revered by both Hindus and Muslims. The Dattatreya shrine sits at 1,895 m. The ghats road to reach it is one of Chikmagalur's most spectacular drives.

Kudremukh National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the biodiversity hotspots of the Western Ghats. Shola forests, Lion-tailed Macaques, and the famous Kudremukh peak (horse-face mountain) await trekkers.
Local Tip: Combine Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri and Hebbe Falls in a single day trip from your homestay — they form a natural loop. Start at Mullayanagiri (sunrise is spectacular) and finish at Hebbe Falls in the afternoon.
Best Time to Visit
September to March is the ideal window. Post-monsoon (Sep–Nov) means full waterfalls, green hills and clearer skies. October to February is peak comfort season.
Monsoon (June–August) is Chikmagalur at its most dramatic — the hillsides are electric green and Hebbe Falls is thundering. Roads are generally good, but check Ghat sections.
April–May is warm but manageable at higher elevations. Ideal for coffee blossom season (February–March) when the plantations smell of jasmine.
How to Reach from Bangalore
